Panama Masterplan is ‘real-life SimCity’ for Atkins
Atkins’ London office has been given the chance to ‘play SimCity
for real’ after being picked to design the masterplan for the
massive new Panama City development.
The £5 billion scheme by developer London and Regional on the
banks of the Panama Canal and Pacific Ocean will see the overhaul
of the abandoned 2,750 acre former US Howard Air Force Base.
The mini-city will include thousands of new homes – ranging from
luxury hill-top villas to retirement communities – major new
science park, call-centre campus, a media village, hotels, spa
resort, golf and country club, retail mall, factory outlet centre,
casino, welfare and community facilities.
At the heart of the scheme are plans for one of the world’s
largest ‘logistics, distribution and inter-modal terminals’ which
will link the existing runway with the canal.
London and Regional’s international development director Jason
Mills said ‘This is a once-in-the-lifetime opportunity to play
SimCity for real on a 2,750 acre paradise sited at one of the great
crossroads of the world’
